Plot

Amreeka tells the story of a Palestinian woman, Muna (Nisreen Faour), and her teenage son, Fadi (Melkar Muallem). After winning the green card lottery, they move to a suburb of Chicago to live with her sister's family, which includes her husband and three daughters. Muna loses her money hidden in a box of cookies: the box is confiscated, which is only noticed by Fadi, who does not know about the money. She does not find a job at her level (she was a bank employee) but is hired by a White Castle fast-food restaurant; she is ashamed of that and lies to her family that she got a job at the adjacent bank. She gets along well with her young colleague Matt.

The family has to cope with negative attitudes toward Arabs. Reacting to this, Fadi starts a fight, and is arrested; however, his school's principal is very sympathetic to the family, and due to his plea Fadi is released the same day.

The family finds out about Muna's job, and comforts her; it is not a big deal. She gets pride in her work.
